The idea

Five days is enough for a good first look at Kerala if you accept some driving. The route below runs from the coast into the Western Ghats and back down to the backwaters: Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, then back to Kochi for the flight home.

Drive times are approximate and depend heavily on traffic and weather on the ghat roads. Plan transfers conservatively.

Day by day

A sensible split:

  • Day 1: Arrive at Kochi (COK). Transfer to Munnar, roughly 4 to 5 hours. Stop at waterfalls on the way.
  • Day 2: Munnar. Tea plantations, a tea museum visit, viewpoints and the Eravikulam area (check whether it is open - parts close seasonally).
  • Day 3: Drive to Thekkady, roughly 3 to 4 hours. Spice-plantation walk in the afternoon.
  • Day 4: Periyar. Boat ride or guided nature walk (book through the forest department's official channels), then on to Alleppey.
  • Day 5: Backwaters by houseboat or canoe, then transfer to Kochi, roughly 2 hours, for departure.

Best time to go

The cooler, drier months from roughly October to March are the most comfortable. The monsoon season is green and quiet and suits travellers who prefer fewer crowds and do not mind rain; some activities such as boat rides can be limited at that time.

Houseboats and wildlife tips

Houseboat rates and rules vary by boat category and season, so compare inclusions: meals, number of cabins, cruising hours and any fuel or tax extras. Ask for a written quote.

For wildlife and boat rides at Periyar, use official booking channels and follow the forest department's timings and rules.

Getting around

A private car with a driver is the simplest way to cover this route in five days. Trains connect Kochi and Alleppey, but hill stations are road-only. Our desk can arrange a car and hotels if you would like a quote.
