Baggage rules by airline

Allowances change often and differ by fare. The airline's page and your e-ticket are the final word.

The basics

Cabin baggage

On most Indian domestic economy fares the cabin allowance is typically around 7 kg in one bag. Airlines can change this and apply different limits to business class or international routes, so verify it on your airline's page.

Checked baggage

The check-in allowance depends on the airline, route and fare brand (some low-cost fares include none). It is printed on your e-ticket; pre-buying extra weight online is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.

Liquids in cabin

Liquids, gels and aerosols in hand baggage must usually be in containers of 100 ml or less, carried together in a transparent resealable bag. Larger quantities go in checked baggage.

Power banks and lithium batteries

Power banks and spare lithium batteries must travel in cabin baggage, not in the hold, and are subject to capacity limits set by the airline and aviation authority. Check before you pack.

Prohibited items

Never pack flammable items, explosives, sharp objects in hand baggage or anything the airline lists as dangerous goods. Rules differ by country, and the security agency's decision at the airport is final.

Tips to avoid excess baggage fees

  • Weigh your bags at home; airport excess-baggage rates are set by the airline and are normally higher than pre-booked extra weight.
  • Carry bulkier items on board within the cabin limit.
  • Add extra baggage during booking or through the airline's Manage booking page before you reach the airport.
  • On multi-airline trips each sector can have different rules - follow the strictest one.
  • Keep valuables, medicines, documents and chargers in your cabin bag.
